Shadows, the good kind.

Last week, we discussed how shadows can be harmful to our faith. We can be afraid of the shadows in life. But we also know that God is light and the shadows have no power against God. Click here if you want to read last week’s post.

Ponder your shadow for a moment.

Other than our vision, how else do we perceive a shadow?

You can’t touch it. Rather, it touches you. Do you feel it?

It makes no sound and you certainly can’t taste it.

But can a shadow interact with our physical world?

As with most (probably all things) things, we can look to God’s Word for some answers.

Dealing with shadows is no different.

Here are the verses in Acts that originally prompted me to write about shadows in the first place.

12The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.” Acts 5:12-16 NIV

Did you catch v. 15? Apparently, there was power in Peter’s shadow!

I see a process here. If I may, let me break that process into each step.

  1. Verse 14 says that “more and more…believed…” God was doing miraculous work in peoples’ spiritual lives.
  2. Verse 15 states, “As a result…”. Result of what? The salvation that these people were experiencing. The people must have been thinking that God can heal physical issues as well as spiritual issues.
  3. Faith was being bolstered by the numbers of salvations. When people get saved, there is always rejoicing.
  4. Due to this new hardy faith, people were taking physical action. It seems that action will follow a decision.
  5. This action led them to find the disciples, specifically, Peter. Verse 12 explains the interest in find these men.
  6. Faith surpasses proximity. Peter did not even need to touch these people. God’s power finds people of faith.
  7. Physical healings took place. God will sometimes meet spiritual needs before physical needs. Other times, it is reveresed. Either way, it was evident that there was an outpouring of God’s power.
  8. God gets the glory. Regardless of how the healing happens or even if it spiritual or physical, God is the one who is doing the healing. Yes, Peter was involved but God only because God chose to use him in this moment.

While we live through our days, we encounter negative shadows practically every day. But God is so faithful. He can turn bad, fearful, and scary shadows into live-giving shadows.

First of all, look to God. Desire Him, not what He can do.

Once we get that priority straight, God can start to move us through the process I described earlier.

Because God is all-powerful and equally mysterious, He will do what He wants, when He wants to.

Keep close to Him and enjoy the ride!

A life lived for God is never lived in disappointment!

Truly This Man…the beginning.

Happy New Year!!!

That phrase can pack a lot of meaning after finishing up 2020.

Hope these first few days of 2021 have been good. I know for me, the last few months have been tumultuous.

But my God is still Lord and in control of the universe. I got this because He got this.

I want to share a story with you. Thanks for reading today!

The pounding of the hammer. Obscenities from the condemned. It is all so familiar to me. Everyone screams. Having crucified hundreds before, I understand the pain that I inflict. This man was no different. Well, no different in that he felt that pain. No, he seemed to embrace the pain. In fact, it almost is as if he wants to know the pain.

I remember when he would speak or preach, there was that same intensity. He always would strive to connect with people. Often times, after the crowd would dissipate, there would be a few stragglers wanting to talk to him. Making direct eye contact, he spoke. And the people listened. They walked away changed. Sometimes he even performed miracles. Intriguing.

What was it about Jesus that had changed them? As I stand here overseeing his crucifixion, I see an ordinary man being tortured to near death. Maybe something in his eyes. It was the eyes, I am sure of it.

Right now, all I see is a bloody mass for a face. His own mother would not even recognize him. Now my curiosity is piqued.

“Soldier, hand me a rag.”
“Yes sir!”

Alright, Jesus, let’s see what is so special about those eyes.

“AHH!!! The light! I can’t see! Help!”

“Peace, do not be afraid.”

“Who are you? What is going on?! Wait, my eyes, I CAN”T SEE!”

“Peace. I am here. Are you ready to see into my eyes?”

“Hold on. Are you Jesus? Wait. Why can’t I see? Where am I? Am I even awake? Just a second ago I was watching you get nailed to a cross. I wiped the blood from your face so I could see into your eyes and then I went blind.”

“What you speak of is correct. But your true request, to find out who I really am, has been granted.”

“All I wanted was to see what was in those eyes. I have seen people transformed. Some physically and others, well, in a different way. Now I stand here blind talking with you. Are we not at Golgotha anymore?”

“We are but I have chosen you. You have a special purpose yet you know not of yet.”

“So I am still doing my duty in commanding your crucifixion? Are there others here? Please explain. And please let me see again!”

“Patience my son. I have given you a second chance. In just a moment, we will return to our respective places outside of Jerusalem. I, on the cross, and you, watching it all.”

“Okay. But how is all of this possible? How can we be there and then here, in the blink of an eye? I mean, it’s not like you are god or something.”

“And now we have come to the crux of the matter. The source of your unbelief. You don’t believe that I am God. Yer we are speaking face to face and you are blind. What do you make of all this?”

To Be Continued…

Lent, pt. 34

Ready for this? I am attempting some poetry!

They go out,

But never return.

All things affected,

Sometimes hurting,

Other times, healing.

Words are powerful. And once we speak them, they cannot be pulled back.

I heard many words today. Honestly, most of them were not positive.

It really made me think how strong our words can be.

I also listened to many good words today. They felt refreshing.

words

Isaiah 55:11 speaks about words going out of God’s mouth and accomplishing His plan.

I softens my heart to know that God never speaks anything that is harmful or wrong.

There are times when His words are not welcome but they are always needed.

Read God’s word today. You can’t go wrong.

bible

And by the way, I think my poem really stinks.

Lent, pt. 18

And with a final burst of strength, she extends her arm with fingers grasping until, finally, they close on cloth. The hem of His garment.

Instantly, she feels whole. Healed. Yes, the pursuit has wrought victory over pain!

Her faith was champion! She pursued and was now devoted.

What a story! It would be great if we all had success stories like this woman. After so much toil and suffering, the end of that season came and she was healed!

There was Pain for 12 years. Lent, pt 14

This led to Desperation.

But, because she did not go to Jesus first, a Problem arose. Lent, pt. 15

And she became Disillusioned.

People were in her way. Lent, pt. 16

They were potential Distractions.

Nothing would stop her Pursuit. Lent, pt. 17

Her Determination was strong.

As we finish her story, Jesus speaks and this woman is healed.

What was the Product of this journey? Now, fully healed, she was Devoted to Jesus.

Sure, she may have been frightened because she did not ask permission or even speak to Jesus. She just reached out and grabbed his robe!

All of her fears or misgivings were dismissed after speaking with the Lord.

She became a devoted follower of Jesus. At least I think she did. The bible does not give us her story after this encounter. So dream with me…

When Jesus performed other miracles, she would be in the background affirming that Jesus is really doing this and it is not some magic trick.

Was she at the scene during one of the miraculous feedings? Can you imagine her sharing some bread with a friend and explaining her own healing?

Or, she was witnessing the death of her Lord. As he hung on the cross, she would urge those around her that this man is innocent. He is God! He healed me!

Sure, those are just speculations on my part but it is fun to think about the future when we see the present.

What is Jesus doing right now.? Will your future be affected by your present?

Simply put, are you devoted to Him?

I hope my words can spur you on to devotion.

Whatever phase (pain, problem, people, pursuit, or product) you are in, keep moving! Don’t let the devil win. Jesus already won. Just live it out.

As devoted followers of Jesus, we can change our world. After all, Jesus changed us first!

devoted

Lent, pt. 15

We read yesterday how the woman, who was subject to bleeding, was in Pain.

In that pain, she was driven to desperation.

However, she soon had a Problem.

Reading Mark 5:25-34 can, again, give context.

If Pain=Desperation, then Problem=Disillusionment.

Here is what I mean.

Before she found Jesus, she tried normal methods to get healing.

Doctors, medicine, etc. But none of that was not working. In fact, she was getting worse.

This disillusionment with the world’s system can sneak up on us. This is what it might look like in today’s day:

Going to the casino because you can’t make rent this month.

Hiring a prostitute because you can’t find a wife.

Leaving a job because you were treated unfairly.

Breaking up with your boyfriend because of trust issues.

There maybe more in your life. We all can have problems.

These circumstances become problems because we don’t go to Jesus first.

The text says that the woman was going to doctors and getting worse before she ever heard of Jesus. She was disillusioned.

But thanks be to God because we have heard of Jesus.

Ironically, He may choose to use the very problems in our lives to bring about healing.

A doctor could do surgery.

An angry spouse could have a change of heart.

You could get a raise at work.

Life with Jesus does not exclude problems. Life with Jesus gives hope through problems.

It is okay to let you Pain push you towards Desperation.

But please don’t let your Problems bring about Disillusionment.

Tomorrow, you can come back to see what part the People will play in our narrative.
