Lent, pt. 3

Lent is a journey.

Today, I have waded through many different emotions when thinking about Lent.

I was excited because there are new opportunities for growth.

There was some fear because of being in new territory.

Guilt snuck in the back door when I didn’t meet my goals for today.

Anger showed up because I was feeling guilty.

mixed emotions

But then one word came to mind.

Perseverance.

Because I am on this journey, I need to persevere.

The Word says that “My grace is sufficient for you.”

That sounds good when the journey seems not-so-good.

Good night.

Lent, pt. 2

1. Lent is a choice.

No one can make me more holy.

No organization can make me a better person.

No ritual or habit will improve my standing with God.

2. It was my choice to observe Lent this year.

I thought that I might feel differently than I did before Lent.

Sure, it is only day 2 but there is no difference in today or any other Thursday.

Feelings. Can’t really trust them. I feel the same.

Choices and emotions.

They do go together but in a certain order.

It seems to me that living for God and following Jesus involves both; choice and emotion.

I think that I need to choose the right thing and then I will feel the right thing.

Restated, choosing right brings right feelings.

I made some choices based on feelings today.

I think that tomorrow will bring more opportunities to make choices.

And I am going to make them based on truth and faith, not feelings.

Or at least I am going to try.

Chin up friend, seek God first (choice) and all these things (emotion) will be added to you.

Good night and God bless!

What should the title be?

Faith. What is it? There are many bible verses about faith but what do we really know about faith?

Feelings. What are they? We all experience them everyday. How do they function? Are they random?

I pose to you this question: Which one, faith or feelings, should influence our decision-making on a day-to-day basis?

confused

I hope to answer that in the next 70 seconds or so.

Faith. Again, the Bible has an exhausting amount of information about faith. Many of the Old Testament people had faith. Jesus talked about it in the Gospels. The rest of the New Testament also speaks to faith. Pretty important? Yep.

But how does faith influence my daily life? Do I need faith to put on socks? Is faith a requirement to hop in the car and drive to work?

What process do I go through to inject faith into my day?

Let’s talk about feelings for a moment.

How are you today? Personally, I rather dislike that question. It becomes routine to ask and responding to it is superficial. That is a generalization, of course but you get the picture, right?

Our feelings can be all over the place or non-existent. They creep up on us when we are least prepared. Overwhelmed by feelings? Sometimes. Other times, I struggle to display anything at all.

Same response, how do feelings influence my daily life? What if I don’t feel like doing something. Do I just not do it? I feel like today is good. So does feeling that way make that day better than other days?

The whole reason for this post is that this idea of faith vs. feelings has been swimming around in my brain for two weeks now. Time to pull the plug on the pool and see what remains.

Without preamble, here is what I think:

Faith should drive my decisions and feelings will follow.

Jesus talked about what it looks like to be a Christ-follower. And honestly, I cannot recall any parts where he addresses feelings. On a larger scale, the whole Bible speaks more to faith than feelings.

Alright then, faith it is. Simple right? Not always. We are a fallen people and so the body we live in is also fallen. Feelings can be extremely powerful. They are not necessarily bad but they can mislead. Feelings can also be great allies in certain occasions.

God said that greater is He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world.

confidence

See I John 4 for the context of that verse. Whatever you may be facing, ask God to give you faith to make it through. Try not to let your feelings be the rudder of your life. Let God, through faith, direct your path.

That might have been more than 70 seconds so thanks for sticking with it.

God Bless!

The X-factor

X+4=7. Solve for X. Remember those algebra days? X is always the unknown. X represents the part that does not have a name or an identity.

The X-factor. The X-factor is the extra part of something. It makes a difference. Provides additional support or backing.

Sports teams know this well. Home field advantage is the X-factor. You can’t really see it. It is difficult to measure. But you can feel it. Its presence is almost tangible.

I live close to Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

lambeau field

The X-factor here is real. Sell-out crowds for every home game. Frozen Tundra.

Yes, the X-factor is a force!

The Word – X-factor

The Worth – We just celebrated Christmas. Or, for this post, Xmas. Why do we call it Xmas?

Here is some information from this website: https://www.vox.com/2014/12/14/7374401/jesus-xmas-christmas

“…the X in “Xmas” literally means Jesus. Allow us to explain.

How can the letter “X” stand for “Christ”?

In Greek, the language of the New Testament, the word Christos (Christ) begins with the letter “X,” or chi. Here’s what it looks like:

Χριστός

So how did that word get abbreviated?

In the early fourth century, Constantine the Great, Roman Emperor from 306-337, popularized this shorthand for Christ…”

Have you made the connection?

In our lives, Christ is the X-factor! He is that extra support. Reinforcement in troubled times. Life comes from him!

The Bible declares that the Holy Spirit dwells in the life of a believer. The very spirit of Christ lives in you and me!

Sure, we can’t always see it or measure it. But we can feel it. The presence of God is very real in our lives.

If Christ is the X-factor and the Holy Spirit lives in us then we become the X-factor!

The Work – There are many days that a believer won’t feel godly. In fact, feeling the opposite seems more true. But whatever you feel today, you are the X-factor.

Live by faith. Your feelings can not always be trusted. Christ will help.

I want to end with an encouraging verse. I Thessalonians 4:1-2

“As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.”

God bless you on your journey today. See you tomorrow for the letter Y!

Faith!

faith

Have you ever climbed a mountain? Ever taken on an outrageously huge project? Ever had paperwork over your head? Me too. When I get in those situations, I freeze. How can I ever do this monumental task set before me!?!? If I am honest, that is how I was viewing this post. More so, this topic. Faith. There was a brief mention of it in one of my posts last month. Hope and Faith are closely related.

But there is so much about faith that can be written! The bible speaks long about faith. And the fact that faith is not clear cut in what it means makes it even more daunting. Faith can be so many things to so many people. Where do I start?

So I froze.

Right now it is Friday morning. I usually post Tuesday some time.

I was fearful of writing something offensive. What if I posted something that was contrary to God’s word? Am I even qualified to do this?

My feelings say no but my faith says YES! So I sat down and started typing…

In the rest of the month, I want to share my thoughts from a few verses in I John. Faith is personal. So I will share my journey.

So I conclude with this idea:

Faith has nothing to do with feelings. (Thank you God!!!)
